6. Make new friends
One of the great things about travel is meeting new people. Talking to new people sober can be difficult but so rewarding. Make an effort to meet someone new every day.
7. Service work
You might have an opportunity for service work at your destination. For example, walking dogs at a shelter or serving a meal to the homeless. This can be the highlight of a trip and can help with staying grounded.
8. Have an itinerary
Have an itinerary of how you will spend your days so you don’t find yourself with so much free time that you get restless and bored. You might enjoy the down time but having a plan in place is a good practice just in case.
9. Download an App
There are so many Apps available to people in recovery these days. You can get an App for meetings, recovery speakers, exercise routines, books, or anything that helps reduce stress.
10. Keep a travel journal
Jot down everything at the end of the day to record all of your experiences. This can be helpful in so many ways and will give you so much joy after the trip.
I didn’t get sober to not experience everything life has to offer. Make memories no matter where you go. It doesn’t have to be an exotic far-away place. Last year my friends and I did our annual trip at my house. We followed the outline above and had a blast. There’s always new things to do - even in our own backyards.
Happy Wandering!!
